A cataract is the process of natural aging of the crystalline lens inside the eye. This causes symptoms like difficulty in seeing, glare around lights, difficulty in driving at night, difficulty in identifying the distance or shapes of the objects, etc. Often people with cataracts complain of the inability to recognize faces or objects at a distance. The lens of the eye becomes hazy and it needs to be replaced to see clearly.

It can be done by a safe and simple procedure called cataract surgery. Contrary to the old belief, it can be safely performed in any weather or any time of the year. At Sankalp Hospital, Ambikapur cataract surgery is performed by advanced equipment with minimal cut ( MICS – Minimally Invasive Cataract Surgery). It is usually a painless procedure that takes approximately 20 minutes. The hazy lens from inside the eye is removed and a new IOL (Intra ocular lens) is placed inside the eye.

This IOL is made of inert material which becomes adhered to the capsular bag inside the eye and gets fixed inside the eye. After a successful surgery, this IOL doesn’t need to be cleaned, replaced or removed. There are various brands and types of IOLs available as an option which may even help you get rid of your glasses after surgery.

No injection is given during the procedure. It can be performed safely irrespective of age when other systemic conditions like diabetes and hypertension are under control. It does not carry any risk in patients with heart disease or a history of Paralysis. It is a daycare procedure where the person is discharged home after one hour of surgery.
No added precautions are needed with diet after surgery. You may be prescribed some eye drops to be used for a few weeks after surgery. The recovery usually takes 1 – 2 weeks and the person can resume their day-to-day activities after a week from surgery. The eye needs to be protected from dust, pollution, smoke, and dirty water for about 2 weeks after surgery. Activities such as jogging, high intensity yoga/exercise, and swimming need to be avoided for one to two weeks after surgery.

After complete recovery, the person usually doesn’t need to wear glasses with the latest options of IOL available at Sankalp Hospital, Ambikapur. These include Trifocal, EDOF, and Toric IOLs. Cataract surgery is a part of modern life for the elderly and studies have shown that it can revolutionize their day-to-day life. It can help them lead an independent life at the same time increasing their life expectancy and reducing the risk of falls and other accidents in old age

Cost of surgery :

Cataract surgery by advanced technology (MICS with Phacoemulsification) may cost as low as 10,000 to 15,000 rupees at Sankalp Hospital, Ambikapur with a good quality IOL implant. Unfortunately, cataract surgery is not covered under any government scheme in Chhattisgarh currently. Sankalp health foundation society organizes various eye camps where we perform cataract surgery at a subsidised rate for needy people with a BPL card. However, if you choose a high-end IOL with multiple features and benefits, the cost of the surgery will increase proportionately to the quality and nature of the IOL implant you may opt for. Cashless treatment options are also available under insurance and TPA.
